July 6, 2017 – Over Seven Million Landsat Scenes Now Available in the USGS Archive

The Landsat archive, the world’s longest continuously acquired collection of space-based, moderate-resolution land remote sensing data, has now surpassed 7 million scenes since Landsat 1 first began collecting data in July 1972. (Read More)

June 27, 2017 – Landsat Multi-Mission Operations Contractor Selected

USGS and NASA are celebrating a significant milestone after selecting General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) to combine the flight operations of Landsat 8 and Landsat 9. (Read More)

Watch Landsat LIVE!

A recent release of the EarthNow! Landsat Image Viewer displays imagery in near real-time as Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 orbit the Earth. Along with the near real-time video stream, EarthNow! also replays acquisition recordings from a list of previous Landsat overpasses. (Read More)

May 31, 2017 - Landsat 8 scenes top 1 million

As of today, there are now over 1 million Landsat 8 scenes available to download from the Landsat archive!  Launched in 2013, Landsat 8 provides the highest-quality data since the Landsat archive was established in July 1972 with the launch of Landsat 1. (Read More)

March 9, 2017 – Harmonized Landsat, Sentinel-2 Surface Reflectance Products Available

The Harmonized Landsat-Sentinel-2 (HLS) project is a NASA initiative to produce a consistent, harmonized surface reflectance product from Landsat and Sentinel-2 data, which was acquired from October 2015 through December 2016 for selected test sites. (Read More)

March 6, 2017 – Landsat 8 Collection 1 Data Available

Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS Collection 1 data acquired over the United States from 2015 to present are now available for download from Collection 1 Level-1 dataset category on EarthExplorer.  (Read More)

April 18, 2016 - Landsat 8 Thermal Data Update

On Monday, April 25, 2016, from 11 am to 3 pm CT, a system release will be implemented to restore the ability to produce valid* Landsat 8 thermal data for all scenes from this date forward. PLEASE NOTE: From 12 pm to 1 pm, no Landsat data downloads will be available. (Read More)

April 12, 2016 - Upcoming Landsat 8 TIRS Reprocessing Information

Toward the end of April, reprocessing efforts will begin for Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS scenes acquired from January 1 to March 31, along with data acquired during April, to create nominal Level-1 products containing valid TIRS data.  Additionally, all future Landsat 8 scenes will contain valid TIRS data—however, newly processed data will use preliminary estimated position information from the TIRS scene select mirror (SSM). (Read More)

February 11, 2016 – Landsat 8: Three Years In Space!

Since its launch on this date in 2013, the Landsat 8 satellite has acquired more than 675,000 scenes, adding valuable time series data to the USGS Landsat Archives!

February 10, 2016 – Landsat 8 Thermal Level-1 Data Update

As of February 10, 2016, many of the scenes acquired from October to December 2015 have been reprocessed into nominal Level-1 products containing valid Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) data and are available for download. The generation of Landsat 8 surface reflectance products from these data will become available within the next week. A message will be posted on the EPSA on-demand interface when higher level processing is available for these scenes. (Read More)

January 13, 2016 - Landsat 8 Thermal Data Update

Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor  (TIRS) data continue to be collected with the scene select mirror encoder electronics disabled (mode 0).  While in this mode, the TIRS line of sight model (LOS) will be regularly updated and modifications are being made to automate revisions to the LOS in the Level-1 Product Generation System (LPGS). (Read More)

January 5, 2016 - Upcoming Disruption of Landsat 8 Data Downloads

Landsat 8 data downloads from EarthExplorer, GloVis, or the LandsatLook Viewer will be unavailable from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm CT on Thursday, January 7, 2016 due to inventory updates. We apologize for this inconvenience.

November 17, 2015 Landsat 8 TIRS Anomaly Update

The Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) Scene Select Mirror (SSM) encoder electronics anomaly investigation continues. In the meantime, Landsat 8 Level-1 products will continue to be made available consisting of valid data for the OLI solar reflective bands but with zero-fill data for the TIRS bands until corrections can be released in early 2016. (Read More)

November 3, 2015 - TIRS Scene Select Mirror Encoder Current Anomaly

At approximately 4:00 PM Central Standard Time (22:00 GMT) Sunday November 1, 2015 the TIRS instrument experienced an anomalous condition related to the instrument's ability to accurately measure the location of the Scene Select Mirror (SSM). (Read More)

October 28, 2015 - Landsat 8 Thermal Sensor Electronics Condition

The Landsat 8 Flight Operations Team is monitoring an increasing trend in the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) B-Side Encoder Electronics current. This condition is similar to the previous observations made on the Encoder A-Side electronics during the fall of 2014. (Read More)

October 13, 2015 - Recent Landsat 8 Data Acquired in Lower Truncation

In September and October 2015, some Landsat 8 scenes were acquired using the lower 12 bits of the entire 14-bit range. Scenes acquired in this mode support the study of dark features, but consequently cause bright data artifacts. For more information see the OLI Lower Truncation Webpage.

June 19, 2015 - Landsat 8 Data Users Handbook Available

The Landsat 8 Data Users Handbook is now available! Please contact us with any questions or comments.

June 9, 2015 - Upcoming Delay of New Landsat 8 Data

The transmission of newly-acquired Landsat 8 data to EarthExplorer and GloVis will be delayed from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm CT on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 while data directories are updated. Data downloads will see no interruptions. We apologize for this inconvenience.

May 28, 2015 - Landsat 8 Surface Reflectance Processing Resumes

Surface Reflectance processing has resumed for Landsat 8 scenes acquired after December 18, 2014. The higher level processing was suspended during the thermal sensor (TIRS) side-b electronics swap. See the Landsat Higher Level Science Data Products Web page for more details.

May 18, 2015 - Landsat 8 TIRS Reprocessing Complete

The reprocessing effort to provide valid thermal data for Landsat 8 scenes acquired December 19, 2014 to March 13, 2015 has been completed. The reprocessing was done in response to the TIRS side-b electronics swap that is documented on the May 8, 2015 Calibration Notice.

Landsat represents the world's longest continuously acquired collection of space-based moderate-resolution land remote sensing data. Four decades of imagery provides a unique resource for those who work in agriculture, geology, forestry, regional planning, education, mapping, and global change research. Landsat images are also invaluable for emergency response and disaster relief.
