April 21, 2017 - Reminder: Upcoming Changes to Landsat Pre-Collection Inventory

April 17, 2017 - Landsat Highlighted at USGS and NASA Earth Day Celebration

An Earth Day Celebration, hosted by several agencies, will take place at Union Station in Washington, D.C., on April 20, 2017. Tim Newman, Land Remote Sensing Program Coordinator from the USGS Climate and Land-Use Change Mission Area, will deliver a presentation with a Landsat focus at a Hyperwall display. (Read More)

April 3, 2017 – Upcoming Changes to Landsat Pre-Collection Processing

Effective April 30, 2017, newly-acquired Landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS scenes will be processed into the Landsat Collection 1 inventory structure only; Landsat Pre-Collection datasets will no longer be populated with new data. Users are strongly encouraged to use the Landsat Collection 1 datasets, as eventually all Pre-Collection datasets will be removed from EarthExplorer

March 31, 2017 - Immediate ESPA changes affect Landsat Pre-Collection data

Effective April 7, 2017 at 10:00 am CDT, the ability to request Surface Reflectance and other Higher-Level data processing for all Landsat 4-5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+, and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS Pre-Collection scenes will no longer be supported by the EROS Science Processing Architecture (ESPA) Interface.  ESPA Pre-Collection orders placed through April 7 will be processed and completed.  (Read More)

March 23, 2017 - Landsat 7 ETM+ Surface Reflectance Interruption

On March 12, 2017, the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard the NASA Aura satellite entered survival mode.  Successful recovery efforts allowed data to resume on March 18, 2017.  Since OMI ozone auxiliary data are required for the processing of Landsat 4-5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ Surface Reflectance from ESPA, no L7 ETM+ scenes acquired from March 12  to March 17, 2017 can be successfully processed to Surface Reflectance.  We apologize for this inconvenience.

March 20, 2017 – Landsat Collection 1 Higher-Level Data Products Status

Starting March 30, 2017, users will be able to request processing of Landsat Higher-Level (Surface Reflectance) data for Landsat 4-8 Collection 1 scenes from EarthExplorer. (Read More)

March 16, 2017 – Elevation discrepancy prompts reprocessing of Landsat 7 Antarctic data

During Collection 1 Level-1 data processing of Landsat 7 ETM+ scenes covering Antarctica, it was discovered that about 2,700 scenes were processed using incorrect elevation data. While acquisition dates vary, the majority of scenes affected were acquired between January 2000 and January 2001. During the week of March 20, 2017, these data will be reprocessed with correct elevation information and will be repopulated on EarthExplorer. This file lists the affected scenes that will be reprocessed.

March 9, 2017 – Harmonized Landsat, Sentinel-2 Surface Reflectance Products Available

The Harmonized Landsat-Sentinel-2 (HLS) project is a NASA initiative to produce a consistent, harmonized surface reflectance product from Landsat and Sentinel-2 data, which was acquired from October 2015 through December 2016 for selected test sites. (Read More)

March 7, 2017 - Pecora 20 Conference Announcement

The Pecora 20 Conference will be held November 14-16, 2017 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The conference theme is “Observing a Changing Earth: Science for Decisions…Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection”, and the symposium will offer a program on applications of satellite and other Earth observations to monitor, assess, and perform projections of future land and water resources, as well as big data and other analytical technologies to improve decision making utilizing satellite data. Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS Collection 1 data acquired over the United States from 2015 to present are now available for download from Collection 1 Level-1 dataset category on EarthExplorer.  (Read More)

March 1, 2017 - Historic Landsat 5 launched 33 years ago today

On March 1, 1984, Landsat 5 launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Landsat 5 was designed and built at the same time as Landsat 4 and carried the Multispectral Scanner System (MSS) and the Thematic Mapper (TM) instruments. (Read More)
